This classroom is not designed to be used as a Kindergarten program- but a "transitional" option for those wanting/needing another year before Kindergarten for extra attention on strengthening academics and social/emotional skills prior to Kindergarten. The classroom is limited in size to a maximum of 12 students. What is Transition Kindergarten? Transition Kindergarten at Montreat Morning School is a program created for children who are turning five by the end of the month of December. What does it have to offer?
The TK program has been carefully crafted over the years to provide Kindergarten based learning while making sure to cater to individual needs, personalities, and interests. Being that MMS is a half day preschool, the TK program does not necessarily offer everything that a traditional kindergarten classroom does. Instead, it offers a variety of academic exposure without the pressure of keeping up to state expectations.
The TK classroom has a scope and sequence that was created based on guidelines from BMP, ACA, and the SCofS required for Kindergarten. The TK scope and sequence is used as a guideline to follow throughout the year but allowing for flexibility on any given day.
This program may be based around Kindergarten level expectations that are seen in the BMP and ACA schools, but it is crafted to have its own unique learning style, making it a learning environment suitable for all learning styles. The guidelines that are provided in the TK SCofS are goals to work toward achieving as well as introducing the children to. Some children that enter TK are entering what would be their kindergarten year. In those cases, the child may or may not attend first grade at the end of their TK year. The TK teachers at MMS strive to meet the needs of those with the potential to enter first grade as well as those who will be attending kindergarten after their TK year. TK teachers are more easily able to administer one on one support and challenge individuals based on their specific needs due to a smaller class size.
The TK teachers of MMS use a program called Heggerty in their everyday learning. Heggerty is based on phonemic awareness which introduces advanced learning skills for your child as they strive to dive into the world of reading.
